What Squarespace Member Areas Can and Can’t Do

In this article I am going to go over the features and limitations of Squarespace Member Areas to help you decide if it is right for you. At the end, I’ve got an exciting announcement. Check it out!

What can Squarespace Member Areas do?

  • House paid content

  • Handle monthly, yearly or one time subscriptions

  • House your online course

  • Password protect your content

  • Provide users with individual logins

  • Be accessed through your Squarespace website

  • Have different navigation from your main website

  • Integrate with Squarespace’s email system

  • Stream audio

  • House embedded video (hosted on YouTube or Vimeo)

  • House downloadable PDFs

  • Have a seamless look and feel with your website

  • Pages in the Member Area have the same functionality as any other pages on Squarespace

  • House up to 10 Members Areas on the same website

  • Be easily built

What can’t Squarespace Member Areas do?

  1. Offer multiple payment options for the same course or membership

For example, you could not offer a one-time payment or split payment option on the same course or membership. Everyone would have to pay either as a one-time payment or recurring payment on the same schedule.

  2. Provide a space for interaction among members (you can do this with Circle).

  3. Drip content (there is a partial workaround for this)

Drip content is the way some courses are set up so that the next unit shows up after the learner has finished the previous unit, or it can be on a time schedule. Member Areas does not have that feature, but you could set up your course using the Blog feature and schedule each unit to release at a certain time. This would work well for courses where all learners start at the same time. For courses with rolling enrollment, the blog workaround would not work.

Sarah Berkeley

I am a front-end web designer, photographer, and conceptual artist. I hold an MFA in Art & Design from the University of Michigan and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I started my career as a UI/UX designer in New York City. Later, I moved to Berlin, Germany to pursue my art career and live a more bohemian lifestyle. After three years in Berlin, I returned to the United States for graduate school. Following my MFA, I began teaching web and graphic design, photography, and video the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Nebraska Wesleyan University and Metro Community College.

In 2018 I left my tenure track position at Nebraska Wesleyan University, to pursue The Unknown! That year I did my first triathlon, founded an artist residency program at a state park in Iowa, performed in Seattle and hiked the 273 mile Vermont Long Trail. In the subsequent years I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, Colorado Trail and half of the Continental Divide Trail. Following clues that appeared during the downtime led me to founding Expansive Media. I am super excited to be able to combine my tech and art skills through Expansive Media. I am also able to incorporate my passion for well-being and community by working with clients who make the world a better place.
